Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
