European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
