Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
