American Military Operation on Venezuela Raises Fears of Potential Greenland Acquisition.

The recent US-led bombardment in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have ignited apprehension regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Members of the former president's base have allegedly set their sights on the resource-rich island following the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Merely a short time following the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive map. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt threat to annex the resource-abundant region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. US security is equally the Arctic's and our security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to ensure security in the North."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly boosted its military budget this year, earmarking a large amount expressly for Northern and regional defence. "Furthermore, we demand complete recognition for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Strategic Goals

The situation were additionally exacerbated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has consistently alarmed European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The island is considered vitally strategic for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It currently houses the most northerly US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a significant television interview, the president declined to rule out the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid growing great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of intent, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's residents desire independence from Denmark, there is also scant desire to become part of the United States. The island has had the option to seek independence for many years.

Analyst View: A Plausible Threat?

Some experts are now re-evaluating the possibility of such a action. One policy director focusing in military analysis admitted she had previously discounted the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she concluded.
