2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Below is the full text from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of the team. Following some time of talks, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known series in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling step forward on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your squad can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or platforms, but fans can expect further news as production progresses.
